POPE AND YOUNG ACTION ALERT – BC GRIZZLY MANAGEMENT
September 26, 2023 - Pope and Young, North America’s leading bowhunting conservation organization is asking you to join them in taking a stand and adding your voice at this critical crossroad of science-informed wildlife management. It is rare that once the public hunting of a species has been eliminated, hunting is ever reinstated. This is one of those opportunities.

THE DEADLINE FOR INPUT IS OCTOBER 6th at 4:00 P.M. PST

The DRAFT Stewardship Framework offering an overview and background is 80 pages, and the questionnaire contains 11 sections. This is all important information, but it is a lot to comprehend.
The Wild Sheep Society, Pope and Young’s Partners in Conservation, has been very close to this situation and is familiar with the DRAFT. They have provided their input and comments to the questionnaire as a reference guide if you choose.

Several Points to Note:
  • Any plan should be framed around the North American Model of Wildlife Management – not emotional rhetoric.
  • Having goals that are specific, measurable and have a timeline to guide the management plan – not just some wording that is “feel good” and has no way to measure results.
  • Work with First Nations to formulate a plan to reinstate grizzly bear hunting in BC.
  • 2017 Auditor General Report stating the greatest threat to grizzly bears is not hunting but habitat degradation due to human activities.
  • Wildlife programs need dedicated funding – a way to raise money set aside for a specific purpose.
     
The survey is thankfully open to non-residents of BC. For the sake of science-informed wildlife, including large carnivore management everywhere, we encourage you join Pope and Young in taking a stand and letting your voice be heard.
